Porter Capital Corp. Spearheading “Spirit of America” effort in Alabama to aid Marine Corps reconstruction projects in Iraq

Birmingham, Ala.—Porter Capital Corp., an Alabama-based leader in innovative asset-based financing solutions, is encouraging other Alabama businesses to show their spirit to our troops in Iraq by making a contribution to the Spirit of America campaign. This worthy organization was established to assist the Marine Corps with their reconstruction projects in Iraq. The latest project they are spearheading is an opportunity to equip and upgrade seven defunct, Iraqi-owned TV stations so that average Iraqis have better televised information to counter efforts to provoke and help reduce conflict.

“We are making a monetary donation to Spirit of America to help with their latest fundraising efforts,” said Marc Porter, founder and president of Porter Capital Corp., “and we are challenging other Alabama businesses to do the same.” Porter came across this need in an April 16th article in the Wall Street Journal promoting a way that Americans could get involved and help.

One year ago, Porter Capital Corp. partnered with a local elementary school to collect items needed by our Marine troops in Iraq. The project was a huge success thanks in part to the generous contributions from many area businesses. “We still remember the smiling faces of the 5th grade kids as they boxed up thousands of treats for the troops at our special send-off party,” said Porter. “It was so successful, we decided to get involved again.”

After reading the April 16th article in the Wall Street Journal, Porter decided to drum up local support for a second time. “If every business in Alabama donated just $100, what a difference we could make in this important cause,” he said. Porter is asking that all donations be made out to Spirit of America and mailed to Porter Capital Corp., 2112 First Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203. Porter Capital Corp. plans to promote the success of the Alabama effort. For information, contact Janet Peacock at Porter Capital Corp., at 205-397-1249.

The Spirit of America’s web site is www.spiritofamerica.net. The organization’s founder, Jim Hake, has been working with the Marine Corps to help their reconstruction projects in Iraq. The Marines identify local equipment needs, and Spirit of America raises the money and purchases the equipment and other items, typically for schools and medical clinics. According to Mr. Hake, news broadcasts in Iraq can be biased, inaccurate and incomplete and these contributions will create seven local television alternatives owned and operated by Iraqis.

As a follow-up story, the Wall Street Journal reported this week that 3,694 Journal readers and friends have contributed $707,750 to date (in less than a week) which will fund the tv stations and many other significant efforts. The individual contributions have ranged from $3.50 to $50,000. The contributions provide Spirit of America with unrestricted funds that enable them to respond rapidly to urgent requests. 100 percent of your donation goes towards requests.
